BOARDING THE EVERGREEN
October Storytime • Wednesday, October 7, 2026
Yesterday morning, Loland disappeared astern.
The Royal Flotilla caught the wind.
Four ships moved out into the Nonestic.
Not toward Yew, as the manifests still insisted.
Not toward the destination we had spent days preparing to visit.
The story changed the chart.
And we listened.
Our new heading was:
THUMBUMBIA.
Beyond it waited another name.
A name we deliberately refused to spend too soon.
BURZEE.
And farther still...
Christmas.
But yesterday was departure.
Today is something different.
Today, there is land ahead.
THUMBUMBIA ON THE HORIZON
It first appeared shortly after dawn.
Not a kingdom.
Not yet.
Only a dark interruption between sea and sky.
The White Rabbit saw it first.
This surprised nobody.
He was standing on a coil of rope with one paw above his eyes and the other holding his watch.
“Land.”
Commander Brine looked up from the chart.
“Are you certain?”
“No.”
Brine stared at him.
The Rabbit lowered his paw.
“It is either land or an unusually determined cloud.”
Peg appeared beside them.
“Clouds do not appear on the coastal chart.”
The Rabbit glanced at him.
“Perhaps nobody asked them.”
Peg opened his ledger.
Hatta, sitting on an overturned barrel nearby, whispered to the Scarecrow:
“He really ought not to encourage Peg before breakfast.”
Peg looked over.
“I heard that.”
“You were meant to.”
The dark line grew.
Trees emerged.
Then slopes.
Then something pale along the shore.
Thumbumbia.
No longer ink on a chart.
A place.
THE FLOTILLA SLOWS
One by one, sails shortened.
The Hare moved to starboard.
The Lionheart held farther offshore.
The Swallow circled to take the opposite position.
And the green ship moved ahead.
Our four vessels have begun acquiring names beyond the names painted on their sterns.
Names that describe what each has become within the Flotilla.
Pinta carries The Hare.
Niña carries The Lionheart.
Swallow needs no translation.
She is simply The Swallow.
And Santa YBR, the green ship carrying us toward the long winter road...
has become:
THE EVERGREEN. 🌳
Not because Christmas has arrived.
It has not.
Not because we have reached Burzee.
We have not.
But because the road ahead is beginning to reveal what this ship may carry through it.
Life through winter.
Memory through darkness.
Green after the leaves fall.
A promise that the season is changing...
without everything living having to disappear.
Commander Brine pointed toward her.
“The landing party transfers to The Evergreen.”
Peg immediately opened a fresh page.
“Already prepared.”
Brine looked at him.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Then why is it prepared?”
Peg looked mildly offended.
“I am a purser.”
That apparently answered everything.
BOARDING
The boats went over first.
Then packs.
Rope.
Water.
Provisions.
Charts.
One crate of instruments.
Two smaller crates nobody admitted ordering.
And a wooden box Peg insisted contained “administrative necessities.”
Barnacle lifted it.
His knees bent.
“Administrative necessities?”
“Paper.”
“This weighs forty pounds.”
“Comprehensive paper.”
Commander Brine walked past.
“Leave it aboard.”
Peg froze.
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
Peg looked toward the Scarecrow.
The Scarecrow looked toward the sea.
This was not cowardice.
This was experience.
One by one, we crossed.
From ship to boat.
Boat to green hull.
Hands caught rails.
Boots found ladders.
Gear came aboard.
And suddenly the deck beneath us was not merely another deck in the Flotilla.
It was the deck that would carry us ashore.
WHY THE EVERGREEN?
There is a practical answer.
She is positioned nearest the landing.
She can hold the party and the equipment.
She can stand offshore while the smaller boats go in.
But Storytime has taught us to notice when practical answers begin carrying something more.
Yesterday we changed course because the story asked us to follow it.
Today we board the ship whose deeper emblem points toward where that story is eventually going.
Not directly.
That would be too easy.
First comes Thumbumbia.
Then the old tale of shadows.
Then the road those shadows once followed.
Then, somewhere ahead:
Burzee.
The Great Ak.
Ryls.
Knooks.
And a child whose name will eventually matter very much.
Claus.
But we are not boarding The Evergreen to race toward him.
Yesterday’s rule still stands:
DO NOT SPEND THE DOOR BEFORE YOU REACH IT.
Thumbumbia gets its turn.
FOUR SHIPS, ONE VOYAGE
The other three vessels remained around us.
The Hare riding lightly on the swell.
The Lionheart holding steady farther out.
The Swallow keeping watch across the opposite water.
The Evergreen preparing to move toward shore.
And there, perhaps, is another part of what the Flotilla is becoming.
Four ships do not have to do the same thing.
One can hold position.
One can scout.
One can carry supplies.
One can make the first approach.
Their sameness would make four ships redundant.
Their differences make a Flotilla.
The same is increasingly true along our Yellow Brick Road.
Stories.
Music.
Rabbit Holes.
Research.
Images.
Voices.
Human imagination.
AI collaboration.
Different instruments.
Different timbres.
Not one instrument pretending to be an orchestra.
An orchestra.
And somebody still has to conduct.
The Scarecrow looked around the deck.
Hatta had found a chair that did not appear to belong there.
The Rabbit was examining a pulley.
Peg was counting boats.
Barnacle was counting Peg.
Commander Brine was watching the coast.
Yes.
Somebody definitely had to conduct.
THE SHORE
By midmorning, Thumbumbia had stopped being a horizon.
We could see individual trees.
Breaks in the beach.
Stone.
Color.
Movement.
Once, the Scarecrow thought he saw something dart between two trees.
A person?
An animal?
A shadow?
He looked again.
Nothing.
Hatta had seen it too.
“Did that shadow just move?”
“Everything moves when you’re on a ship.”
“Not away from the thing casting it.”
The Scarecrow turned.
But Hatta was still looking at the trees.
This time he was not smiling.
THE OLD STORY IS GETTING CLOSE
That is the peculiar thing about inherited stories.
From a distance they are literature.
Titles.
Publication dates.
Characters in an index.
Maps.
Footnotes.
Then you travel toward them long enough...
and suddenly the shoreline appears.
Yesterday Thumbumbia was the name that replaced Yew on our chart. The course change was deliberate: October Storytime had begun asking for continuity, depth, consequences, and stories allowed to continue beyond a single day’s visit. YBR OCTOBER LOGS 2026
Today we are close enough to lower a boat.
That changes things.
We are no longer discussing the story.
We are approaching it.
PREPARE TO LAND
Commander Brine stepped onto the foredeck.
“Landing party.”
Conversation stopped.
Even Peg closed the ledger.
Mostly.
Brine looked toward shore.
“Boats first. Equipment second. Nobody wanders. Nobody investigates anything alone.”
The White Rabbit raised one paw.
“No.”
The Rabbit lowered it.
Hatta raised his.
“No.”
Hatta lowered it.
Brine looked at the Scarecrow.
“You?”
“I was going to ask whether we had lunch.”
Peg brightened.
“I have that inventory.”
Barnacle groaned.
For one precious second, Commander Brine considered returning to Loland.
Then the wind shifted.
The Evergreen turned.
Her bow came around toward Thumbumbia.
The three other ships held their positions behind her.
The shore widened ahead.
A boat swung over the rail.
Blocks squealed.
Ropes tightened.
And somewhere among the trees...
a shadow moved again.
This time there was no doubt.
The Scarecrow saw it.
Hatta saw it.
The White Rabbit saw it.
Even Commander Brine saw it.
Peg looked up from his ledger just in time to miss it.
“What?”
Nobody answered.
He frowned.
“What?”
The first boat touched the water.
Yesterday the story changed our course.
Today we have reached the shore it chose.
And now comes the dangerous little moment every map eventually demands:
You can study the coast forever.
You can chart it.
Name it.
Measure it.
Research everything anyone has ever written about it.
But sooner or later...
YOU HAVE TO GET OFF THE SHIP.
Commander Brine lifted one hand.
The deck went still.
Then:
“LANDING PARTY. BOARD.”
The Scarecrow stepped forward.
Behind him floated the Royal Flotilla.
Beneath him waited the boat.
Ahead waited Thumbumbia.
And somewhere beyond the trees...
the shadows had already begun to run.
