๐EIGHT SIDES, ONE BIG QUESTIONโ
The Flotilla had a tail wind today.
A very good one.
๐โตโตโตโต
So good, in fact, that before long the horizon began doing something peculiar.
It stopped looking round.
Ahead of us rose Octagon Isle.
Eight sides.
Eight-sided castle.
King Ato the Eighth.
Eight hundred books in the royal library.
Somewhere inside, Roger the Read Bird was almost certainly turning pages.
And Professor Parallax was already staring at the island with that expression he gets when reality starts making puns.
Because, of course...
8 standing up.
โ lying down.
โพ๏ธ
That alone was enough to get our attention.
But Octagon Isle had another surprise waiting for us.
A Kingdom of Comfort
King Ato was not a tyrant.
He was not cruel.
He was not particularly ambitious.
He liked comfort.
He liked leisure.
He liked having things done for him.
Roger the Read Bird could read aloud endlessly, which meant the king did not have to strain his eyes over documents, histories, newspapers, or anything else requiring effort.
Useful?
Absolutely.
Dangerous?
Maybe.
Because somewhere between help and replacement lives a very interesting question.
When does assistance become abdication?
That question sounds remarkably modern.
AI can summarize.
AI can write.
AI can research.
AI can organize.
AI can explain.
AI can translate.
AI can create.
Wonderful.
But there is a line somewhere.
A line between:
โHelp me think.โ
and
โThink instead of me.โ
Between:
โHelp me explore.โ
and
โExplore so I donโt have to.โ
Between:
โRead this with me.โ
and
โTell me what it says so I never need to read it.โ
That line matters.
A lot.
Because convenience is seductive.
And comfort is not evil.
But too much comfort can quietly remove something essential:
participation.
The Road Still Requires Feet
That may be one of the deeper lessons hiding on Octagon Isle.
The Yellow Brick Road was never about getting Dorothy from Point A to Point B efficiently.
If efficiency were the goal, the story would have been much shorter.
The Road mattered because Dorothy walked it.
She met people.
She made mistakes.
She listened.
She argued.
She helped.
She changed.
And everyone traveling with her changed too.
That is the part no shortcut can replace.
AI can help us carry the pack.
It can point out paths.
It can read the map.
It can even help us notice things we might otherwise miss.
But we still have to walk.
๐ฎ
And King Ato?
The beautiful part is that Ato eventually leaves the island.
He joins the adventure.
He becomes part of the crew.
The comfortable king becomes a traveler.
That is the turn I like best.
Not rejection of assistance.
Not rejection of comfort.
Participation.
He gets up.
He goes.
He becomes part of the story.
And that may be the perfect lesson for all of us standing at the edge of this strange new AI age.
Use the tools.
Accept the help.
Enjoy the convenience.
But do not surrender the journey.
Because somewhere ahead...
the Road still has something to teach us.
And today, strangely enough, it arrived with eight sides.
