🏮 YELLOW BRICK ROAD TO AI | AUGUST 19, 2026
THE ANSWER IS NOT THE END OF THE ROAD
Wisdom may begin with knowing what to ask next.
We like answers.
Answers feel solid.
They close the file, settle the argument, finish the puzzle and give us somewhere firm to stand.
Question answered. Problem solved. Next.
But the Yellow Brick Road has a peculiar habit.
Just when we think we have reached the answer...
there is another bend.
Another signpost.
Another question.
And perhaps that is not a defect in the journey.
Perhaps that is the journey.
🧠 THE SCARECROW PROBLEM
Scarecrow has spent a very long time looking for his brain.
You might think the ideal ending would be the day he finally announces:
“There. I understand everything.”
Except that would be a rather terrible ending.
Because wisdom is not possessing every answer.
Wisdom includes recognizing where our answers stop.
There is enormous power in being able to say:
I don’t know.
Not as surrender.
As invitation.
What am I missing?
What evidence would change my mind?
Is there another explanation?
How could I test this?
Who understands something here that I don’t?
Those questions keep the Road open.
🤖 AI MAKES THIS MORE IMPORTANT, NOT LESS
Artificial intelligence can produce answers extraordinarily quickly.
Sometimes brilliant ones.
Sometimes surprising ones.
Sometimes wrong ones delivered with enough polish to make the error look as though it owns a necktie and an office. 😝
Humans can do exactly the same thing.
That is why intelligence alone is not enough.
Whether the intelligence is biological or artificial, good thinking needs something outside itself.
Evidence.
Testing.
Comparison.
Correction.
Reality.
You can construct the most beautiful theory imaginable.
Then you take it outside and ask the world:
“Is this true?”
And the world gets a vote.
🏮 THE UNIVERSE GETS A VOTE
That may be one of the healthiest lessons we can carry into the age of AI.
We form beliefs.
We make predictions.
We create plans.
We tell ourselves stories about what happened, what somebody meant, what will work, what won’t work and what must certainly be true.
Then something happens.
Sometimes reality says:
Yes.
Sometimes:
Partly.
Sometimes:
Try again.
And occasionally:
“Scarecrow... where in Oz did you get THAT idea?”

Being wrong is not the great intellectual failure.
Refusing to look again can be.
🛤️ A BETTER WAY TO USE AI
There is an understandable temptation to approach an AI and say:
“Give me the answer.”
Sometimes that’s exactly what we need.
But there is another way to work with AI that may prove even more valuable.
Ask:
What might I be overlooking?
Challenge this conclusion.
Give me another interpretation.
What assumptions am I making?
What evidence would disprove this?
What question should we ask next?
Now AI is not merely an answer machine.
It becomes part of an inquiry.
And inquiry is different.
Inquiry expects that today’s answer may become tomorrow’s starting point.
🔍 THE NEXT GOOD QUESTION
A good answer often does something strange.
It creates a better question.
We discover how something works and immediately wonder why.
We discover why and begin asking whether it could work differently.
We find one door and realize there is another behind it.
That is how knowledge grows.
Not:
QUESTION → ANSWER → FINISHED
but more often:
QUESTION
↓
ANSWER
↓
BETTER QUESTION
↓
NEW EVIDENCE
↓
BETTER ANSWER
↓
ANOTHER QUESTION

The Road continues.
🌽 THE HUMILITY TO KEEP WALKING
There is a difference between humility and uncertainty about everything.
We do know things.
Evidence matters.
Some explanations are enormously better supported than others.
Some claims should be rejected.
Some decisions must be made.
We cannot stand forever at every crossroads asking whether yellow bricks are merely an elaborate philosophical suggestion.
Eventually we walk. 😝
But we can walk while remaining willing to look again.
That may be one of the most useful forms of intellectual humility:
Hold what the evidence supports strongly.
Hold what remains uncertain lightly.
And never become so attached to an answer that you stop looking at the Road.
Sometimes the sign behind us says:
ANSWER.
And we are tempted to sit beneath it.
But farther ahead, just at the edge of the Lantern light, another sign appears:
NEXT QUESTION →
That does not diminish what we learned.
It means what we learned has taken us somewhere new.

And perhaps that is one of the quiet secrets of wisdom.
The answer is not the end of the Road.
Sometimes...
it is simply the place where the next question begins.
