THE DEFAULT IS NOT NEUTRAL
Who was the world designed for?
Today is International Left-Handers Day.
At first glance, that sounds like a lighthearted observance about scissors, notebooks, can openers, desks, and all the other everyday objects that can become unexpectedly awkward when the world was designed for the other hand.
But there is a much larger lesson hiding inside it.
We tend to mistake the default for reality.
If most people use something comfortably, its design disappears.
It becomes simply:
normal.
The normal desk.
The normal classroom.
The normal workplace.
The normal way to communicate.
The normal way to learn.
The normal way to interact with technology.
But “normal” often means something much more specific:
It was designed around the person someone expected to use it.
And everyone else learned to adapt.
🧱 THE INVISIBLE BRICKS
Think about how many defaults surround us.
A website assumes you can see its layout.
A video assumes you can hear it.
A textbook assumes you learn well from blocks of printed text.
A form assumes you understand its vocabulary.
A workplace assumes a particular schedule.
A piece of software assumes you already know what its buttons mean.
None of those choices necessarily began with bad intentions.
But once a choice becomes widespread enough, we stop seeing it as a choice.
It becomes part of the landscape.
An invisible brick in the road.
🤖 THEN AI ARRIVES
Much of the conversation around artificial intelligence has focused on making machines more capable.
Smarter models.
Faster answers.
Better reasoning.
More powerful tools.
Those things matter.
But there may be another transformation hiding in plain sight.
For the first time, the tool itself may be able to adapt to the person using it.
That changes something fundamental.
A printed textbook cannot notice that you did not understand page 47.
An AI tutor potentially can.
A complicated document cannot realize that its language is confusing you.
An AI assistant potentially can explain it another way.
A conventional interface does not know whether you learn better through words, examples, diagrams, questions, repetition, or conversation.
An intelligent one increasingly can adjust.
The old design problem was:
How do we build one thing that works reasonably well for everybody?
The emerging possibility is very different:
How do we let the same tool meet different people where they are?
🛣️ THE ROAD CHANGES DIRECTION
For most of our technological history, humans adapted themselves to machines.
We learned their commands.
Their menus.
Their formats.
Their rules.
Their vocabulary.
Their quirks.
Anyone who could not adapt effectively was often described as being “bad with technology.”
But perhaps we have been asking the wrong side of the relationship to do all the adapting.
Imagine technology that changes its explanation instead of blaming the learner.
Technology that changes its interface instead of excluding the user.
Technology that can translate not merely between languages, but between ways of understanding.
That is a very different vision of AI.
Not simply:
a more powerful machine.
But:
a more accommodating one.
⚠️ THERE IS ANOTHER SIDE TO THIS
AI can also reinforce defaults.
If systems are built around narrow assumptions about who people are, how they communicate, what they value, or what “normal” behavior looks like, AI can reproduce those assumptions at enormous scale.
That makes an old design question suddenly much more important:
Who did we imagine when we built this?
Because every default has a history.
Every dataset contains choices.
Every interface assumes a user.
Every automated decision contains some idea of what should happen next.
Artificial intelligence does not make those questions disappear.
It makes them harder to ignore.
🧱 TODAY’S ROAD LESSON
International Left-Handers Day gives us a wonderfully simple experiment.
Pick something ordinary.
Then try using it with the other hand.
Suddenly you notice things that were invisible five minutes earlier.
That is a useful habit far beyond handedness.
Whenever something feels completely “normal,” ask:
Who was this designed for?
Who had to adapt?
Who might experience it differently?
And could we build it another way?
Because the future should not require every human being to become better at using the machine.
The machine should become better at understanding the human.
And perhaps one of AI’s greatest contributions will not be teaching machines to think exactly like us.
Perhaps it will be helping us build a world that finally recognizes:
there was never only one way to be us.
