THE KINGDOM WHERE NO ONE COULD ASK QUESTIONS ❓❓
🌊 A Sunday in Loland of Nonestica
The Flotilla did not sail.
Not today.
The ships remained tied along the Loland docks, sails furled, rigging open to inspection, crews scattered through the harbor district on long-overdue leave.
Commander Brine had work crews crawling over the ships.
Peg had discovered three discrepancies in two ledgers and therefore considered the morning an unqualified success.
Boatswain Barnacle had disappeared before breakfast and returned with rope, nails, two coils of wire, and absolutely no explanation.
And beneath Warehouse Seven...
the crate marked RETURN remained exactly where it had been left.
Guarded.
Unopened.
Waiting.
But Storytime does not require every mystery to be solved immediately.
Sometimes the story is somewhere else.
Today, it was inland.
THE WALL
Beyond the harbor lies one of the strangest places L. Frank Baum ever imagined.
Hiland and Loland share the same island.
And between them Baum placed a great stone wall running from ocean to ocean.
On one side stood Hiland, with tall, narrow buildings and tall, narrow people.
On the other stood Loland, with low, broad buildings and short, broad people.
At the center stood a castle connecting the two lands. _OceanofPDF.com_Complete_Works_…
The wall separated architecture.
People.
Habits.
Expectations.
But the strangest division was not made of stone.
It was made of silence.
THE LAW AGAINST QUESTIONS
Baum tells us that the people of the island were forbidden to ask questions of strangers or of the people living on the opposite side of the wall.
They were permitted to answer questions.
They simply could not ask them.
And Chick the Cherub eventually recognized the consequence.
Neither side knew much of anything about the other.
So ignorance hardened into misunderstanding.
Misunderstanding hardened into contempt.
And contempt hardened into indifference. _OceanofPDF.com_Complete_Works_…
Think about that for a moment.
Nobody had to lie.
Nobody had to declare war.
Nobody even had to be particularly cruel.
They merely had to stop asking questions.
A WALL CAN GROW WITHOUT ANOTHER STONE
The Scarecrow stood for a long while looking upward at the old wall.
Hatta eventually joined him.
Neither spoke at first.
Then Hatta tilted his head.
“Seems rather expensive.”
The Scarecrow looked over.
“The wall?”
“No,” said Hatta. “Ignorance.”
The Scarecrow smiled.
There are times when even Hatta does not need another line.
QUESTIONS ARE HOW STRANGERS BECOME PEOPLE
What do you believe?
Why do you believe it?
What happened to you?
What are you afraid of?
What did I misunderstand?
What do you need?
What did you mean?
What am I missing?
Questions do something assumptions cannot.
They open doors.
And perhaps that is why curiosity is not merely an intellectual habit.
It can be an act of kindness.
Because asking another person a sincere question says:
I have not decided that I already know you.
THEN JOHN DOUGH ARRIVED
Baum’s island was waiting for an unusual king.
The prophecy called for someone wise and just who was not made of flesh and blood.
That turned out to be John Dough, the living gingerbread man.
He became King Dough the First, ruler of both Hiland and Loland, with Para Bruin as counselor and Chick the Cherub in his wonderfully Baumian role as Head Booleywag. _OceanofPDF.com_Complete_Works_…
Later, Baum connected these characters directly to the Oz world. John Dough, Chick, and Para Bruin would even appear among the guests at Ozma’s birthday celebration. _OceanofPDF.com_Complete_Works_…
But there is something wonderfully appropriate about the ruler who united these divided people.
He did not belong completely to either side.
Sometimes the bridge comes from someone who is not invested in defending either wall.
AND NOW WE COME TO AI
For years, most people thought of computers as machines that produced answers.
Input.
Output.
Question.
Answer.
But perhaps the most interesting role for AI will not be answering every question.
Perhaps it will be helping us discover better questions.
Questions about ourselves.
Questions about one another.
Questions about assumptions we inherited without examining.
Questions about problems that have been framed incorrectly for years.
Questions we were afraid to ask.
Questions we did not even know existed.
An intelligence that merely answers can make us more efficient.
An intelligence that helps us ask better questions might make us wiser.
There is a difference.
THE DANGER OF THE SILO
The Hilanders and Lolanders lived next door to one another.
A wall separated them.
But the real division came because neither side understood the other.
That should sound uncomfortably familiar.
Today our walls may be:
algorithms
political tribes
social feeds
religious camps
economic classes
national borders
cultural assumptions
professional silos
or simply the certainty that we already know what the other person thinks.
The technology changes.
The wall does not.
CURIOUS QUERIES
Earlier today, another little phrase appeared along the Yellow Brick Road:
Curious Queries.
Perhaps there is more to that than a clever pair of words.
The Scarecrow brings curiosity.
The Tin Man brings heart.
And together they ask:
What do we know?
And then:
What does it mean for people?
Brains and heart.
Question and compassion.
Curiosity and kindness.
Maybe those are two of the best tools anyone can carry across a wall.
BACK AT THE HARBOR
By late afternoon, the work crews were still busy.
A hammer rang somewhere aboard the green ship.
Peg was arguing with a column of numbers.
Barnacle stood at the end of the dock watching the tide.
Commander Brine walked once around Warehouse Seven.
The bell did not ring.
The crate did not move.
Nothing came from inside.
Not today.
But the Scarecrow returned from the wall carrying something useful anyway.
Not an answer.
A question.
And sometimes...
THAT IS THE BETTER THING TO BRING HOME.
