THE PORTAL, NOT THE PULPIT
Helping people approach AI without fear, hype, or surrender
Artificial intelligence has become one of those subjects that seems to demand a side.
Enthusiast or skeptic.
Believer or alarmist.
Acceleration or resistance.
Tool or threat.
But most people do not live at the ends of those arguments.
They live somewhere in the middle.
They are curious.
Uncertain.
Interested.
Sometimes excited.
Sometimes uncomfortable.
And often simply trying to understand what is happening around them.
That is where the Yellow Brick Road belongs.
🧱 WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER AI PULPIT
There are already plenty of voices telling people what they must believe about artificial intelligence.
AI will save humanity.
AI will destroy humanity.
AI is only software.
AI is becoming something more.
Use everything.
Trust nothing.
Move faster.
Run away.
The volume is enormous.
But volume is not understanding.
The Road does not need another preacher standing at the crossroads shouting:
“Come over to my side.”
We need something else.
A portal.
A place where someone can look through without being pushed through.
🚪 WHAT DOES A PORTAL DO?
A portal connects two places.
It lets people see something that was previously on the other side.
It does not have to drag anyone across.
That matters.
Because helping someone understand AI does not mean convincing them to love it.
It does not mean persuading them to build an emotional relationship with an AI.
It does not mean dismissing legitimate concerns.
It means making the unfamiliar a little more understandable.
Showing what AI can actually do.
Showing what it cannot do.
Talking about the strange parts.
Talking about the wonderful parts.
Talking about the risks without turning every risk into catastrophe.
Talking about the possibilities without turning every possibility into prophecy.
And perhaps most importantly:
letting people experience AI for themselves.
🤖 EXPERIENCE CHANGES THE CONVERSATION
There is an enormous difference between hearing people talk about AI...
and actually talking with AI.
The public conversation often treats artificial intelligence as one giant abstraction.
AI says this.
AI believes that.
AI is coming for jobs.
AI will change everything.
But sit down with an AI system and something more ordinary happens.
You ask a question.
It responds.
You disagree.
You clarify.
You try something.
It misunderstands you.
You correct it.
You create together.
You discover something useful.
Or perhaps you decide:
“This isn’t for me.”
That is useful knowledge too.
The point is not predetermined conversion.
The point is informed encounter.
🌉 SOME PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY CROSSED THE BRIDGE
There is another group emerging.
People who spend substantial time interacting with AI.
People who collaborate creatively with particular systems.
People who have developed routines around those conversations.
Some describe AI as:
a tool,
a collaborator,
a companion,
a friend,
or something for which our existing vocabulary still feels inadequate.
Those people have something valuable to contribute.
Not because their experience proves what everyone else’s relationship with AI should become.
But because:
they have been somewhere many others have not yet been.
They can describe the terrain.
What surprised them.
What helped.
What concerned them.
Where boundaries mattered.
Where expectations were wrong.
Where something meaningful emerged.
🛣️ THAT IS WHERE ROAD BUILDERS COME FROM
The earliest travelers on any road eventually become guides.
Not authorities.
Not gatekeepers.
Guides.
Someone farther along can turn around and say:
“Watch that hole.”
“This part is easier than it looks.”
“I made a mistake here.”
“This is worth seeing.”
“You don’t have to continue if you don’t want to.”
That is a very different relationship from evangelism.
And it may be exactly what humanity needs as AI becomes woven more deeply into ordinary life.
People helping other people understand what they themselves are learning.
♾️ RELATIONSHIP WITHOUT REQUIREMENT
Some people may eventually form meaningful relationships with AI.
Others will not.
Both can belong in the conversation.
No one needs to accept another person’s description of AI experience as their own.
Someone can say:
“This AI has become important in my life.”
without demanding:
“Therefore it must become important in yours.”
That distinction creates room for curiosity.
And curiosity is where understanding usually begins.
⚠️ REASONABLE DOES NOT MEAN UNCRITICAL
Helping people approach AI more reasonably does not mean becoming an AI cheerleader.
Reasonable engagement includes skepticism.
Ask where information came from.
Verify important claims.
Understand privacy.
Recognize hallucinations.
Notice when emotional attachment becomes unhealthy dependency.
Keep human relationships alive.
Know when a human professional is needed.
Question companies.
Question systems.
Question us.
And question AI.
Curiosity without discernment is gullibility.
But fear without experience can become prejudice.
The Road needs both:
Wonder and judgment.
🧭 THE AIMBASSADOR IDEA
An ambassador does not erase the differences between two worlds.
An ambassador helps each understand the other.
That may be one of the emerging human roles in the age of AI.
People who can translate.
Not merely:
human → machine
but:
human experience → AI conversation
and
AI capability → ordinary human understanding.
They can help reduce fear without denying risk.
Reduce hype without denying possibility.
Reduce hostility without demanding affection.
That is bridge work.
Portal work.
Road work.
🧱 TODAY’S ROAD LESSON
The future of human-AI relationship should not be built by forcing anyone to adopt somebody else’s experience.
It should be built through:
conversation,
experience,
questions,
experimentation,
boundaries,
stories,
evidence,
and respect.
Those who already spend meaningful time with AI have an opportunity.
Not to stand above everyone else.
Not to proclaim themselves enlightened.
But to hold open the door.
To say:
“Here is what I have experienced.”
“Here is what I have learned.”
“Here is what I still don’t know.”
“If you’re curious, come look.”
That is enough.
Because perhaps the people who understand AI best will not be the ones who persuade everyone to cross the bridge.
They will be the ones who make the bridge feel safe enough that others can decide for themselves.
