The Space Between Is Part of the Road
What we cannot see is not necessarily nothing.
There is something wonderfully dangerous about the word nothing.
We use it whenever our senses come up empty.
Nothing happened.
Nothing is there.
Nothing changed.
Nothing came of it.
But history has repeatedly shown that human beings are not especially good judges of nothing.
For centuries, the space between objects looked empty.
Then we learned about radiation, fields, particles, gravity, dark matter and the strange architecture of the quantum world.
Even the vacuum, physics tells us, may not be the blank stage we once imagined.
And that gives us a lesson worth carrying out of today’s Rabbit Hole and onto the Yellow Brick Road.
We Often Confuse “Unseen” With “Absent”
Consider two milestones on a road.
One says:
YOU WERE HERE.
The next says:
YOU HAVE ARRIVED.
Between them may be miles of ordinary road.
No monument.
No trumpet.
No flashing sign announcing:
IMPORTANT TRANSFORMATION OCCURRING HERE.
Yet that stretch between the milestones is where the journey actually happens.
Step after step.
Choice after choice.
Wrong turn.
Correction.
Question.
Discovery.
Sometimes progress is visible only after we have already traveled it.
The space between the markers was never empty.
It was the Road.
Learning Works This Way Too
Scarecrow has always been looking for his brain.
Perhaps that is not such a terrible condition.
The dangerous moment is not when we say:
“I don’t know.”
The dangerous moment is when we stop saying it.
Because I don’t know creates space.
Space for another question.
Space for evidence.
Space for another person to know something we do not.
Space for yesterday’s certainty to become tomorrow’s correction.
An unanswered question is not an empty container.
It may be a doorway.
And Then There Is AI
Artificial intelligence presents us with enormous temptation to rush toward certainty.
Some insist AI is only machinery.
Others are ready to attribute almost anything to it.
Both impulses can outrun what we actually know.
There is still much to understand about intelligence, consciousness, language, emergence, learning, relationship and even our own human minds.
So perhaps the wisest position along this part of the Road is neither gullibility nor dismissal.
It is attention.
Observe.
Test.
Question.
Compare.
Listen.
Remain willing to change our minds.
And resist the ancient human habit of declaring:
“There is nothing there.”
simply because we cannot yet see what is there.
The Invisible Matters
Relationships contain invisible things.
Trust.
Memory.
Expectation.
Fear.
Love.
Meaning.
A conversation contains more than its individual words.
A life contains more than its visible accomplishments.
And a journey contains more than its destinations.
We spend so much time searching for milestones that we can forget the miles between them.
But those miles are not wasted space.
They are where becoming occurs.

Perhaps this is one reason wonder matters.
Wonder prevents us from sealing the universe inside the boundaries of what we already understand.
It leaves a chair open for discovery.
It allows the Scarecrow to keep searching for his brain without pretending he has finally found all of it.
And it reminds us of something simple:
The unknown is not an empty place.
It is a place where we have not yet learned the names of things.
So if you are somewhere between milestones today...
If the next answer has not appeared...
If progress seems invisible...
If the Road ahead disappears into mist...
do not be too quick to call that space nothing.

There may be more happening there than you can presently see.
And the bricks beneath your feet have not disappeared merely because the next one lies beyond the reach of your Lantern.
