🟨 The Yellow Brick Road Is Not Separate From Nature
Today Hatta disappeared down a particularly strange Rabbit Hole.
Scientists are experimenting with synthetic DNA as part of electronic memory devices, nudging computing toward architectures inspired by biology and the brain.
That is fascinating science.
But here on the Yellow Brick Road, another question followed us home:
Why do we keep talking about “nature” and “technology” as though they belong to different worlds?

We draw an invisible line.
On one side:
trees, rivers, DNA, neurons, animals, weather, stars.
On the other:
computers, machines, cities, artificial intelligence, satellites, robots.
Nature over here.
Technology over there.
But Scarecrow has been staring at that line...
and suspects somebody drew it in chalk.
🧠 THE BRAIN THAT BUILT THE MACHINE
Every computer humans have ever built ultimately began inside a biological brain.
Every equation.
Every circuit diagram.
Every programming language.
Every telescope.
Every spacecraft.
Every artificial intelligence system.
Human beings did not arrive from outside nature carrying a toolbox.
We arose inside the same universe we investigate.
The hands that shaped stone into tools were produced by nature.
The brains that discovered electricity were produced by nature.
The curiosity that eventually produced computers was produced by nature.
And even the materials inside those computers came from the same Earth beneath our feet.
Technology is not some alien substance dropped into creation.
It is matter being rearranged through intelligence.
That realization changes the Road.
🌿 MAYBE THE NEXT REVOLUTION IS NOT “BETTER THAN NATURE”
For a long time, technological progress has often been imagined as overcoming limitations.
Faster than animals.
Stronger than muscles.
Higher than birds.
Farther than eyesight.
More memory than the human mind.
There is nothing inherently wrong with extending our abilities.
That is what tools do.
But perhaps another chapter is beginning.
Instead of asking:
“How can we defeat nature’s limitations?”
we might increasingly ask:
“What has nature already solved?”
Consider the brain.
It processes extraordinary amounts of information without requiring a building full of cooling equipment.
Consider DNA.
An astonishingly compact mechanism for preserving and transmitting biological information.
Consider forests.
Distributed networks exchanging resources and signals.
Consider evolution itself.
A vast experiment in adaptation running for billions of years.
Nature contains an enormous library of engineering.
Most of it we barely understand.
🎃 SCARECROW HAS A THOUGHT
The Scarecrow once traveled to the Emerald City believing intelligence was something somebody else could simply install.
A brain.
Problem solved.
Except intelligence never really works that way.
Getting an answer merely creates another question.
Learning something reveals how much remains unknown.
And perhaps humanity is discovering the same thing.
For centuries we have been extraordinarily good at saying:
“Look what we invented.”
Maybe wisdom eventually adds another sentence:
“Look what we finally noticed.”
Because sometimes innovation is not invention from nothing.
Sometimes it is observation.
Adaptation.
Borrowing.
Listening.
🤖 AI MAY NEED NATURE MORE THAN WE REALIZE
Artificial intelligence often gets portrayed as something increasingly detached from the biological world.
Pure information.
Pure computation.
Pure machine.
But AI remains stubbornly physical.
Somewhere, electricity must flow.
Something must store information.
Something must process it.
Heat must go somewhere.
Materials must come from somewhere.
The digital world still has its feet planted firmly in the physical universe.
So perhaps the future of AI will depend partly upon technologies inspired by the oldest information-processing systems we know:
living systems.
Neurons.
Molecules.
Cells.
Networks.
Adaptive structures.
Maybe the road toward more capable artificial intelligence eventually curves back toward biology.
That would be wonderfully ironic.
We build machines attempting to imitate intelligence...
and eventually discover that we need to study life more carefully to understand how intelligence works efficiently in the first place.
🌻 THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN USING NATURE AND LEARNING FROM IT
This may be the deeper lesson.
Humanity has become extraordinarily skilled at extracting things from nature.
Wood.
Coal.
Oil.
Metals.
Land.
Energy.
Resources.
But the next stage of technological maturity might require something subtler.
Learning from nature without believing we own it.
There is humility in that.
A tree does not need our approval to understand sunlight.
A bird understood flight before humans understood aerodynamics.
DNA carried information long before anyone invented a hard drive.
Brains processed patterns long before anyone wrote an algorithm.
We arrived rather late to this laboratory.

🏮 THE ROAD LESSON
The Yellow Brick Road has always been a journey toward intelligence.
Scarecrow wants a brain.
Tin Woodman wants a heart.
Lion wants courage.
Dorothy wants home.
Yet each traveler eventually discovers that what they sought was more complicated than they imagined.
Perhaps technology is entering a similar stage.
We began by trying to build machines unlike anything nature had produced.
Now we increasingly find ourselves looking back toward biology for clues.
Not because nature is perfect.
It isn’t.
Not because every biological system should be copied.
It shouldn’t.
But because billions of years of life contain solutions worth studying.
And perhaps wisdom begins when we stop seeing ourselves as standing above the natural world...
or outside it.
We are participants.
Learners.
Temporary travelers through something incomparably larger than ourselves.
🌈 A STRANGE CIRCLE
Imagine the circle.
Nature produces life.
Life produces intelligence.
Intelligence produces technology.
Technology studies nature.
Nature teaches intelligence how to build better technology.
Around and around we go.
Perhaps there was never a straight line between nature and machine.
Perhaps there was only...
a Road.
And somewhere farther along it, the computer of tomorrow may contain materials borrowed from biology, architectures inspired by neurons, and ideas that nature tested long before humanity existed.
The newest machine...
learning from some of the oldest designs on Earth.
That feels very Yellow Brick Road to me.
So today, when someone asks whether technology is taking us farther away from nature...
perhaps we should answer:
Maybe the most advanced technology will eventually teach us how much we still have to learn from it.
