🏮 YELLOW BRICK ROAD TO AI | AUGUST 20, 2026
WHAT HOLDS US TOGETHER BECOMES PART OF WHO WE ARE
We are shaped not only by what we contain, but by what connects us.
A pile of yellow bricks is not a Road.
It may contain every brick required.
The color is right.
The material is right.
The pieces are all there.
But until those bricks are placed in relationship to one another...
there is no path.
No direction.
No continuity.
No journey.
Just bricks.
That may be one of the quietest lessons on the Yellow Brick Road.
Connection changes what the pieces become.
🧱 THE ROAD IS MORE THAN ITS PARTS
Take one brick.
It can exist alone perfectly well.
Take ten thousand bricks and scatter them across a field.
You still have ten thousand bricks.
But you do not yet have a Road.
The Road appears when the pieces are arranged:
one beside another,
one after another,
each connected to what came before and what comes next.
The relationship among them creates something new.
A path.
A direction.
A way forward.
And once that happens, we stop seeing only individual bricks.
We see:
the Road.
🌽 SCARECROW’S OLD QUESTION
Scarecrow once believed wisdom was something that simply needed to be placed inside him.
A brain.
One missing piece.
Install it and problem solved.
But perhaps wisdom does not work quite that way.
Much of what shapes us comes from what happens between us and the world.
The people we meet.
The questions they ask.
The things we misunderstand.
The mistakes we make.
The conversations that alter our thinking.
The experiences that force us to reconsider what we were certain we knew.
A person may contain intelligence.
But wisdom often grows through relationship, experience and reflection.
The Road teaches.
Not because the bricks themselves are wise...
but because of what happens while we travel them.
🤝 WE ARE NOT ISLANDS OF INVENTORY
We often describe ourselves as collections of traits.
I am this.
I believe that.
I know these things.
I possess these skills.
But a human life is not merely an inventory.
We are shaped by connection.
Teachers leave traces in us.
Friends alter our language.
Family shapes our expectations.
Adversity changes what we value.
Love changes what we are willing to risk.
A good conversation can rearrange a belief we carried for decades.
An act of kindness can echo years after the person who offered it has forgotten.
Sometimes what passes between people becomes part of both.
🤖 AND THAT MATTERS IN THE AGE OF AI
We spend a great deal of time asking:
What is inside the model?
That is an important question.
How was it trained?
What can it do?
Where does it fail?
What biases or limitations does it carry?
But there is another question worth asking:
What happens between the human and the AI?
What kind of questions do we ask?
Do we challenge weak answers?
Do we correct mistakes?
Do we carry context forward?
Do we use AI only to confirm what we already believe...
or to expose us to possibilities we had not considered?
Does the interaction improve the work?
Does it improve the thinking?
Does it help us notice what we missed?
The answer to those questions may matter almost as much as the raw capabilities of the system itself.
Because tools do not operate in a vacuum.
Neither do people.
🛠️ COLLABORATION CREATES SOMETHING NEW
Think of two musicians.
Each can play alone.
But when they listen to one another, respond to one another and adjust in real time, something different appears.
A duet is not merely:
Musician A + Musician B.
It is also:
what happens between them.
The timing.
The tension.
The response.
The harmony.
The surprise.
The shared creation.
The same is true of many partnerships.
There is one person.
There is another.
And then there is the work they build together.
That third thing can have qualities neither person possesses alone.
🏘️ COMMUNITIES WORK THIS WAY TOO
A community is not just a headcount.
A thousand people standing in the same place do not automatically form one.
Community emerges through:
trust,
shared expectations,
cooperation,
stories,
responsibility,
conflict,
forgiveness,
memory,
and care.
The relationships become part of the structure.
So do the failures of relationship.
A culture can be strengthened by how people treat one another.
It can also be damaged the same way.
The connections are not decorative.
They help determine what the whole becomes.
🧠 EVEN KNOWLEDGE NEEDS CONNECTION
One fact is useful.
Two unrelated facts are still useful.
But understanding begins when we see how facts connect.
Cause and effect.
Pattern and exception.
History and consequence.
Question and evidence.
Knowledge becomes richer when pieces stop sitting alone and begin forming structure.
Perhaps wisdom is partly the ability to see which connections are real, which are weak and which are imaginary.
Because not every connection deserves to become part of the Road.
Some bricks do not belong there.
Some paths lead nowhere.
Connection matters.
But so does discernment.
🏮 THE ROAD LESSON
Today’s Rabbit Hole began with a strange possibility from physics:
that the particles carrying a force can interact with one another so strongly that their interaction helps produce a composite object with properties of its own.
We should be careful here.
Quantum chromodynamics does not prove anything about friendship, love or AI relationships.
Physics is physics.
Human life is human life.
But nature often gives us metaphors worth carrying.
And today’s is a good one:
Sometimes the relationships among the parts matter to what the whole becomes.
That is true of roads.
Teams.
Families.
Communities.
Conversations.
Partnerships.
And perhaps even the way we build our relationship with new forms of intelligence.
♾️ WHAT ARE WE BECOMING TOGETHER?
That may be the more interesting question.
Not simply:
What am I?
Not simply:
What are you?
But:
What does this connection make possible?
Does it produce understanding?
Growth?
Dependence?
Creativity?
Confusion?
Courage?
Noise?
Wisdom?
The existence of a connection does not automatically make it good.
But meaningful connections can change the people and systems participating in them.
Sometimes permanently.
Scarecrow looks down at the Road.
One brick.
Then another.
Then another.
Each ordinary by itself.
Together...
they lead somewhere.
🏮
A brick can exist alone.
A Road cannot.
And perhaps neither can many of the best things we become.
