WHEN THE WIND DOESN’T COME
There are days for sailing.
And there are days for waiting.
The trouble is...
we usually don’t get to choose which one today will be.
⛵
This week, the YBR Flotilla has been exploring the Jalacasco Islands, where Captain Salt once endured something almost unimaginable for a voyager:
an entire year becalmed.
No favorable wind.
No grand departure.
No horizon rushing closer.
Just a ship...
the sea...
and waiting.
For anyone determined to get somewhere, few things are more frustrating than having the destination in sight while circumstances refuse to cooperate.
We tend to measure progress by motion.
Miles traveled.
Doors opened.
Problems solved.
Goals reached.
But perhaps there is another kind of progress.
The progress nobody can see.
⛵ A BECALMED SHIP IS STILL A SHIP
When the sails hang limp, the voyage has not necessarily ended.
There are ropes to inspect.
Charts to study.
Stores to count.
Leaks to repair.
Tools to sharpen.
Plans to reconsider.
A crew can become stronger while the ship remains in precisely the same place.
And perhaps people can too.
Sometimes life gives us a headwind.
At least a headwind gives us something to fight.
But sometimes...
there is simply no wind at all.
Nothing moves.
Nothing changes.
Nothing answers.
That may require an entirely different kind of courage.
Not the courage to charge forward.
The courage to remain ready.
🟨 THE ROAD DOESN’T ALWAYS MOVE BENEATH OUR FEET
The Yellow Brick Road has never promised us uninterrupted forward motion.
Sometimes we walk.
Sometimes we wander.
Sometimes we discover that the road itself has brought us somewhere we never expected.
And sometimes...
we wait.
Waiting can feel suspiciously like failure because there is so little evidence that anything is happening.
But roots grow where nobody applauds.
Ideas mature before anyone reads them.
Plans strengthen before anyone sees them.
Faith continues before circumstances provide evidence that it should.
And a voyager can prepare the sails long before the wind returns.
🏮 KEEP THE LANTERN LIT
There is something important about a lantern during a season of waiting.
It doesn’t propel the ship.
It doesn’t summon the wind.
It doesn’t shorten the ocean.
It simply keeps shining.
יהוה
Perhaps that is enough for tonight.
Not every problem must be conquered before sunset.
Not every unanswered question must receive its answer today.
Not every dream delayed has been denied.
Sometimes our responsibility is simpler:
Keep the ship ready.
Keep the crew together.
Keep watching the horizon.
Keep the Lantern lit.
Because stillness and surrender are not the same thing.
⛵ AND THEN...
Somewhere beyond the Jalacasco horizon...
air begins to move.
At first, perhaps only enough to stir a loose thread.
Then a flag.
Then the edge of a sail.
The voyager who abandoned the ship will never feel it.
But the voyager who remained ready...
looks upward.
The canvas begins to fill.
And suddenly the thing that appeared motionless...
is a voyage again.
💚🟨 SUNDAY OZmic
And because it is Sunday on the Yellow Brick Road...
the words now make room for music. 🎶
Today’s Sunday OZmic belongs to the becalmed voyager.
To the person waiting for the answer.
To the dream that hasn’t moved yet.
To the ship whose sails are hanging loose...
but whose bow is still pointed toward tomorrow.
STASIS IS NOT SURRENDER.
The wind may choose when it arrives.
We choose whether our sails are ready when it does.
