🌬️💨💨WHEN THE WIND RETURNS🌊⛵⛵⛵⛵
Yesterday, the Flotilla waited.
The sails hung loose over Jalacasco.
The sea barely moved.
And we remembered something Captain Salt learned the hard way:
Sometimes the wind simply does not come.
You cannot command it.
You cannot negotiate with it.
You cannot become angry enough to make it blow.
So you repair the rigging.
Study the charts.
Tend the ship.
Take care of the crew.
And wait.
But eventually...
something changes.
A flag moves.
Canvas stirs.
A ripple crosses water that had looked like glass.
Someone aboard ship looks upward.
THE WIND HAS RETURNED.
And suddenly waiting presents an entirely different problem.
Now you have to move.
There are times in life when circumstances prevent progress.
But there are also times when we become so accustomed to waiting that waiting itself becomes comfortable.
We tell ourselves:
Not yet.
Maybe tomorrow.
I’m still preparing.
I need a little more information.
Sometimes that’s wisdom.
Sometimes it’s fear wearing spectacles.
Because preparation has a purpose.
EVENTUALLY, YOU RAISE THE SAILS.
The Yellow Brick Road has never promised us uninterrupted forward motion.
Neither has the sea.
There will be becalmed days.
Wrong turns.
Broken machinery.
Empty pockets.
Plans that looked brilliant Tuesday and ridiculous Friday.
People who disappoint us.
Doors that remain stubbornly closed.
And occasionally...
a door we thought was locked suddenly opens.
That moment requires something from us too.
Not patience.
Courage.
🟨 A NEW WEEK
This morning our four ships are leaving Jalacasco.
⛵ ⛵ ⛵ ⛵
But we’re doing something different.
We’re not merely pointing toward the next island.
We’re bringing out the charts.
There are more than thirty days between today and Halloween.
There are islands we have not explored.
Kingdoms worth revisiting.
Places deserving more than a twenty-four-hour stop.
Open water between them.
Stories waiting beneath names we’ve passed on maps a dozen times.
So perhaps the question isn’t:
WHERE DO WE GO TODAY?
Perhaps it’s:
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
Those are very different questions.
One produces a destination.
The other can produce a journey.
And perhaps that applies beyond our little Flotilla.
Most of us spend enormous amounts of time solving today.
The bill.
The deadline.
The email.
The problem.
The thing demanding attention before lunch.
Sometimes necessity leaves us no choice.
But occasionally we need to lift our eyes from today’s coordinates and look farther across the chart.
Where are we trying to be a month from now?
A year from now?
What are we building?
Who are we building it for?
And which destinations deserve enough of our time that we shouldn’t hurry through them merely to say we were there?
The wind is blowing again.
Good.
But wind alone doesn’t determine where a ship goes.
Someone still has to choose the course.
So today we spread the charts across the table.
We sharpen the pencil.
We look toward the horizon.
And before these four ships race toward another island simply because they can...
we ask:
WHERE IS THIS VOYAGE REALLY GOING?
