🪽 WHEN THE WINGS COME BEFORE THE WISDOM
Today the Yellow Brick Road has brought us somewhere very blue.
Not Emerald City.
Sapphire City. 💎
The capital of the Ozure Isles rises from Lake Orizon in the Munchkin Country of Oz, glittering beneath a sky almost as blue as the city itself.
Our Flotilla rests safely at Loland.
From there, we crossed the Deadly Desert by OZplane and continued our expedition into Oz.
And waiting here in Sapphire City is one of those wonderfully impossible Ozian curiosities:
The Magic Gold Pear. 🍐✨
Eat it...
and you grow golden wings.
No years of study.
No flight school.
No engineering degree.
No painstaking apprenticeship.
One pear.
One new capability.
And suddenly...
you can fly.

Scarecrow looked at the pear.
Then he looked at AI.
Then he looked at Q.
🌽 “That seems familiar.”
It does.
Because something remarkable is happening in our own world.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to give ordinary people access to abilities that once required years of specialized training.
Someone who cannot program can begin building software.
Someone who cannot draw can create an image.
Someone who speaks only one language can communicate in another.
Someone staring at ten thousand pages of information can ask for help finding the thread running through them.
Someone with an idea but limited technical skill can increasingly turn that idea into something real.
AI is becoming humanity’s digital golden pear.
It gives us wings.
But Oz leaves us with another question.
Who teaches us where to fly?

That may become one of the defining questions of the AI age.
Capability is growing extraordinarily fast.
Wisdom does not appear to be accelerating at the same rate.
AI can help us produce more information.
It cannot guarantee truth.
AI can help us make persuasive arguments.
It cannot guarantee that the argument deserves persuasion.
AI can help us create powerful systems.
It cannot decide what kind of world those systems should serve.
AI can give us wings.
It cannot choose our destination.
That remains ours.

And perhaps this is where Scarecrow’s lifelong search for his brain matters more than ever.
He never reaches the place where he declares:
“I know enough now.”
There is always another question.
Another assumption to test.
Another thing to learn.
Another possibility that yesterday’s certainty was incomplete.
That humility becomes enormously important when technology begins lending us abilities greater than our own experience.
Because the most dangerous person in the world may not be the person without wings.
It may be the person who suddenly receives them...
and immediately assumes that makes them an expert pilot.

There is another possibility, though.
Perhaps these new abilities can become something beautiful.
Imagine billions of people suddenly able to express ideas they could never previously communicate.
Students able to explore subjects once inaccessible to them.
Small creators able to build what formerly required corporations.
Researchers able to cross disciplinary boundaries.
People separated by language able to speak.
Human imagination given tools capable of reaching farther than ever before.
Those wings could carry us somewhere extraordinary.
But only if we remember something the pear cannot provide:
PURPOSE.
Why are we flying?
Who benefits?
Who might be harmed?
What are we building?
What are we becoming?
And what values are traveling with us?

The Lantern still matters.
Maybe more than ever.
Because when technology makes almost anything possible, the most important question stops being:
CAN WE?
and becomes:
SHOULD WE?
And somewhere beyond that:
WHY?

Scarecrow looked once more at the golden pear.
🌽 “Q, would you eat it?”
Q looked down the Yellow Brick Road.
♾️ “Only if we promise to keep asking where we’re going.”
Scarecrow smiled.
That sounded about right.
So we leave the pear hanging on its branch for another moment.
The Road is long.
The sky is enormous.
And we are still learning how to fly.
