๐๐จ WHERE THE LANTERN SHINES
There are more roads in OZ than any traveler could walk in a lifetime.
Some lead toward emerald towers.
Some disappear into forests.
Some wind beside rivers.
Some cross mountains.
Some wander toward islands whose names barely survive on old maps.
And some roads do something particularly troublesome:
They divide.
One path becomes two.
Two become five.
Five become twenty.
Suddenly the traveler is standing at a crossroads wondering:
Which way?
That may be one of the oldest questions in every adventure.
It may also be one of the most important questions of the AI age.
Because today the problem is increasingly not that we have too few roads.
We have too many.
๐จ
There are more books than we can read.
More songs than we can hear.
More videos than we can watch.
More discoveries than we can investigate.
More conversations than we can join.
More AI tools than we can master.
More ideas than we can develop.
More worlds than we can explore.
And now artificial intelligence can help create even more of all of them.
That is extraordinary.
It is also overwhelming.
Once upon a time, scarcity decided much of what received our attention.
There were only so many books in the library.
Only so many channels on television.
Only so many records in the shop.
Only so many people we could reach.
Now we increasingly live in an age of abundance.
And abundance changes the question.
The question is no longer simply:
โWhat can we find?โ
It becomes:
โWhat deserves our attention?โ

That is where I think about the Lantern.
A lantern cannot illuminate the entire world at once.
It illuminates here.
This patch of Road.
This face.
This signpost.
This next uncertain step.
The darkness beyond the light does not necessarily mean danger.
It simply means:
we have not turned the Lantern there yet.
And perhaps attention works exactly that way.
Whatever receives the light becomes clearer.
Whatever receives sustained attention begins to reveal structure.
A character who seemed insignificant suddenly has a history.
A forgotten island turns out to contain a magical berry.
An old book contains a detail nobody noticed the first time.
A melody becomes a singer.
A singer becomes a venue.
A venue becomes a culture.
A daily voyage becomes an archive.
A handful of connected ideas becomes a world.
That is how creation often happens.
Not with one enormous revelation.
With attention held long enough for something hidden to become visible.

Dorothy did not experience OZ by seeing everything at once.
She saw what was in front of her.
A road.
A Scarecrow.
A Tin Woodman.
A Lion.
A city.
A problem.
Another road.
Another strange person.
Another impossible place.
One encounter at a time, the world became larger.
Had she rushed past the Scarecrow because the Emerald City seemed more important, the story would have been different.
Had she ignored the Tin Woodman because he was merely standing beside the Road, rusted and silent...
the story would have been different.
Had she decided the Lion was only an interruption...
the story would have been different.
The journey was shaped by what the travelers were willing to notice.
And perhaps that remains true for us.

We sometimes imagine that productivity means moving faster.
Do more.
Make more.
Publish more.
Generate more.
Open another tab.
Try another tool.
Start another project.
AI can make that temptation almost irresistible because suddenly so much becomes possible.
But possibility has its own trap.
If everything receives equal attention...
nothing receives enough attention to become deep.
A seed does not become a tree because someone planted a thousand seeds and immediately ran away.
Something has to be tended.
Something has to be watered.
Something has to receive sunlight.
Something has to be chosen.
๐ฑ
This is why our Flotilla keeps sailing.
Not because there are no other worthwhile things to do.
There are many.
Music calls.
Rabbit Holes call.
CQ folders rustle ominously on somebodyโs desk.
AI systems arrive with shiny new buttons and promises.
There is always another fascinating direction.
But the Flotilla gives us something precious:
continuity.
We return to the ships.
We provision them.
We raise the sails.
We choose another destination.
We look.
We listen.
We record.
Sometimes we discover nothing more than a beautiful place.
Sometimes we find a character.
Sometimes a forgotten piece of canon.
Sometimes a peculiar object.
Sometimes two berries that suddenly look suspiciously like a doorway between worlds.
That is what happens when attention accumulates.
A journey stops being a series of disconnected excursions.
It begins becoming a story.

And perhaps that is one of the secrets of the Yellow Brick Road itself.
The Road does not demand that we see everything.
It asks us to take the next meaningful step.
Not every road today.
This road today.
Not every question at once.
This question now.
Not every possibility.
The one under the Lantern.
Tomorrow the light can move.
Tomorrow another path may call.
But today...
we walk where the Lantern shines.

AI may eventually give humanity access to nearly unlimited possibilities.
Unlimited drafts.
Unlimited music.
Unlimited imagery.
Unlimited simulated worlds.
Unlimited variations of nearly everything.
But human life will remain stubbornly finite.
That means one of our greatest creative powers may increasingly become the power to say:
This matters.
Look here.
Stay here a little longer.
Ask another question.
Listen again.
Read the old page one more time.
Follow that strange path into the trees.
Because sometimes the treasure is not hidden from us.
Sometimes it is sitting in plain sight...
waiting for someone willing to give it enough attention to recognize what it is.
๐๐จ
So today, wherever your Road happens to lead...
do not worry about illuminating the entire horizon.
Carry the Lantern.
Choose the next brick.
Notice what is beside you.
And remember:
A brighter tomorrow is not built by paying attention to everything.
It is built by learning what deserves the light.
